The Kit Cat Clock has been brightening up people’s homes for decades and has become a tradition in many families, not only in the United States, but around the world. The cat’s wacky smile has filled homes and offices alike with merriment and excitement. The Kit Cat Clock was created in 1932 by the California Clock Company, during the Great Depression. While the people of this great nation were endeavoring to survive, the clock entertained them and gave them a smile. The Depression years have long ago passed and yet the popularity of the Kit Cat Clock has grown every year. Though it has gone through changes in 75 years, the clock is still very much like the original, with just minor changes in its appearance. There actually exists a fan club, boasting over 10,000 members. Their creed is: “Put a smile on everyone’s face; Love in everyone’s heart; Energy in everyone’s body; and Be a positive force in everyone’s life!”

Originally the Kit Cat Clock was electric, but with new technology in the late 1980’s, the clock mechanism became battery operated. Kit Cat has an air of sophistication with his white bow tie. Surrounding the black clock face are his four paws, with claws extended, but his wide, infectiously happy smile shows that he means no harm. The clock’s numerals are in easy-to-read white, with the “Kit Cat” name underneath the number “12”. Kit Cat’s animated rolling eyes and his tail gently sweeping back and forth says that he’s “purrrfectly” at ease on your wall.
This American made clock is a cherished family timepiece and is frequently handed down to the next generation. My Kit Kat classic clock was an eagerly anticipated, welcome addition to the kitchen in my “new” vintage home with the original 1950s kitchen. Sadly, my kitty’s tail and eyes failed to move back and forth reliably – although the clock kept time, its raison de la vie was to swing! I soon discovered that a plastic and copper disc near the bottom inside the casing hung loose, and was apparently meant to reside securely in an opening just its size, placing it in close proximity to a portion of my kit kat’s tail. When I pushed the disc into the portal and it stayed, swinging began! I suppose I should SuperGlue the disc in place, to avoid it becoming jostled, causing all swinging to stop. For when there’s no swing to my kitty, I come down with a case of ennui!
It’s one of those gotta have items. If you like cats, you have to get one of these. Maybe two. Highly recommend.
